Last  month Ruskin House Nursery  took part in a variety of activities in order to celebrate Black History Month.

We celebrated   by tasting  African & Caribbean fruits  and vegetables which concluded with a tasty  soup with dumplings.

We extended children’s play in the tactile area  by making dumplings with play dough .

Handa’s  Surprise story was told to the children which gave  further  opportunity  to explore different  texture and taste of fruits and vegetables. We also looked at where Handa came from, the clothes she and her community wore and answer all the questions about it.

Our children have also  been talking about their families and where everyone comes from as well as learning a bit about why we celebrate Black History Month.

Did You Know?
Origins of Black History Month.
In the United Kingdom, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987. It was organised through the leadership of Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who had served as a coordinator of special projects for the Greater London Council (GLC) and created a collaboration to get it underway.
